Construction begins on new pickleball courts

July 28,2023

Pickleball players in Enterprise will soon have 8 new courts for games, as construction begins on the complex next to Enterprise State Community College.

Pickleball, the racket or paddle sport, combines elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong.  It’s less physically demanding than tennis and appeals to a wide age range.

“We have seen a tremendous interest in Pickleball here in Enterprise,” Director of Community Services and Recreation Billy Powell said. “It’s the fastest growing sport in America.  This time last year, we had between 10 and 20 players each day. Now we are up to 20 to 36.”

The pickleball complex, which sits at the intersection of George Wallace Drive and Campus Drive, will include 8 courts with lights, is expected to be complete by February 2024.  Enterprise City Council awarded the bid for Phase I construction to Beasley Construction at the June 6 council meeting. No other bids were received.

Currently, pickleball players can use the courts at the Bill Morris Tennis Complex.  The courts are open at all times, but reservations are encouraged through Enterprise Parks and Recreation.

“These new courts will allow our community to enjoy this high-demand sport.  We know there’s a demand for more courts and we are excited to get Phase I started and look forward to what’s next for our pickleball players.”
