Council approves park name change to honor longtime citizen

December 19,2023

Enterprise City Council Tuesday passed and adopted a resolution to rename the Westside Community Park to Ray Helms Westside Community Park to honor the community contributions of Helms who passed away in April 2020.

The Park is located at the corner of West College Street and North Ann Street.

“Ray spent countless hours during his life working to improve the Westside Community Park for the betterment of the city,” Mayor William E. Cooper said. “I think this is a fitting tribute to honor his memory.”

A request to rename the Park was made by Westside Community Association President Charlene Goolsby at the Dec. 5 Council meeting.  Goolsby noted Helms’ role in various park improvements to include a gazebo and pavilion.

“Ray Helms, the chairman of the park committee, dedicated most of his free time to make those projects happen,” Goolsby said. “The Westside Community Park would not be the wonderful place it is today had it not been for Ray’s dedication.”

Enterprise Director of Community Services and Recreation Billy Powell told Council he supported the request “100 percent.”

“I had the opportunity to work with Ray for many years. He was a very dedicated individual not only to the park, but to the Westside community and the City of Enterprise,” Powell said.

The Westside Community Association will purchase a new sign and the City of Enterprise will assist in coordinating the sign placement to reflect the new name.
