Mayor announces suspension of recycling services for now

Mayor William E. Cooper announced Thursday that the city recycling service has been suspended until April 30, or until conditions associated with the COVID-19 threat is passed.

The city recycling drop-off point at the Department of Public Works complex, 529 Glover Ave., was closed at the end of the business day today.

“We deemed this action necessary because of the required personal contact associated with receiving and sorting recyclable materials and our need to protect the employees assigned to that task,”

The decision was made after the CDC released information from studies indicating the virus can live on recyclable surfaces such as plastics and cardboard for a significant length of time,” Mayor Cooper said.

The Mayor said at this time, City Hall continues to remain open and providing needed services as safely as possible.

However, residents who need to do business with the city are still being asked to do so by email, on the phone, by regular mail or by the city website at

The mayor also mentioned other items of public interest at this time.

To further help protect employees and customers stay safe during the Coronavirus threat, a display has been set up in the hall outside of the Water Department at City Hall for job applications and water service connection or cancellation forms. Customers who would prefer not to enter the Water Department lobby may fill the forms out and leave them in the drop box beside the double glass doors.
